This year, airlines are estimated to receive $157 billion globally in ancillary or complementary services, which is 5.7% more than last year, according to the consultancy IdeaWorksCompany.
Ancillary services are those services that a passenger pays for to have a more comfortable trip, such as checked baggage under the plane, extra baggage, seat selection, traveling with pets, onboard food, access to VIP lounges, travel insurance, car rental or hotel reservations, among others.
“Ancillary service revenues now represent 15.7% of total airline revenues, up from 9% in 2016.
“There are airlines where this proportion ranges between 3.2% and 62% of their revenue,” the consulting firm emphasized.
